Shams To Host Ronnie’s Real Debut

According to the Guardian, if Ronaldo’s proposed transfer from Man Utd to Madrid goes through on time, his debut for the club could be at the modest Tallaght Stadium, a ground with a capacity of 3,000 and home to Shamrock Rovers.
The rumours have been circulating for weeks and is thought to be confirmed on Monday next week. If it goes through it will be a major coup for the Dublin club. They, like most Irish sides, are in dire financial shape and this tie, for which the capacity will be extended to 10,000 (don’t ask me how) will be a huge financial help.
The thought of this guy playing his debut for Real in Dublin is amazing, playing against Shamrock Rovers is even more crazy. The game will have to be ratified by the FAI before being confirmed as the Eircom League of Ireland season is underway (it’s a summer league for those not in the know) but it’s expected to be cleared for takeoff.
Shams are a huge club, one of the most successful in Irish history but have fallen on hard times. Having Real play them will be a brief but welcome return to glamour the Dublin club.

One of the Dundalk papers has said that Barcelona may play a game at Oriel (well, a Barcelona XI, anyway). Not sure how much truth there is in it, though.

That would be sweet, now all I need is Sligo Rovers playing United and my summer is complete…

Would Shamrock Rovers just bank the money? Heaven knows the other teams could use with some cash too. It would be cool if the Irish teams could attract friendlies from a couple of other big teams and distribute the cash around the league to keep it healthy.
