Kevin Doyle Moves to Wolves

June 30th, 2009 | By: Kevin | 2 Comments »

Republic of Ireland and now former Reading striker Kevin Doyle has been linked with a handful of Premier League clubs ever since Reading lost in the Coca-Cola Championship playoffs, but it was Wolves who won out for the signature of the widely proclaimed all-rounder for a club record fee of £6.5m.

Kevin Doyle is unveiled at Molineux

In my personal opinion, this move is one that not only increases Wolves’ chances of staying up dramatically, but a move that will do wonders for the Republic of Ireland squad. Doyle will be joining an already large cast of Irish players at Wolves and will have the opportunity to create an entirely new level of good chemistry with them. Ireland hopefuls, but by no means locks, Stephen Ward, Kevin Foley, Stephen Gleeson, Darren Potter, and Andrew Keogh are all members of the team, with Ward, Foley, and Keogh most likely to see extensive time for the club.

Quite simply, more Irish players playing in the Premiership and more Irish players on club teams together will both lead to a better Irish side. These guys playing in the Premiership only increases our chances of a good result against Italy at Croke Park on October 10th.

Have you seen much of him Kevin? I know he’s 6′1″ so was wondering if you think he’ll be a useful target man, or if there’s more to his game than that.

Also, I’d be a little worried about Keogh’s playing time with this signing. Doyle and Ebanks-Blake will likely be first choice up front (assuming Wolves stick with 4-4-2) so that leaves Iwelumo, Keogh and Vokes fighting for minutes.

Kevin Doyle is a true all-around striker. He can hold up the ball, he’s very solid in the air, and he has very good pace for a guy his size. He should be first choice at Wolves next to Ebanks-Blake and first choice for Ireland next to Keane. I’ve got little doubt in my mind about both.
